10 Insider Tips On Car Sales Negotiations

Having both a background in negotiation training and experience working as a car salesman for a prominent Southern California Acura dealership, I’ve got something of a unique perspective on the world of car sales. Outside of the standard discounts, I’d estimate a swing of about $3,000 dollars on contentiously negotiated sales for new cars priced $30,000 to $50,000 dollars.

The cardinal sin of a car salesperson is to let the customer walk out. Management hates it! I suggest walking out several times during the negotiation, threatening to walk out frequently, and putting time pressure on the sales and management team to come up with a number quickly.It’s an aggressive tactic and it’s not very polite, but it sends the obvious message that you can buy the car anywhere and that the sales team better sharpen their pencil. Yikes!
